Ha! I went into control panel and simply told the scanner to just scan and not use any HP software. It works perfectly now. Imagine that!

I'll take you up on that scanner offer if I can't get this one to work by then. I'm corresponding with HP about the problem. I just sent them another email saying I'm at the end of my wits and explained why. In the meantime, I'm gonna see if some other program on this computer can work with the scanner.
