Sharp Wit for a Dull World!

Trucker's Log, Friday, August 29th, 2008

I'm in York, Pennsylvania getting my trailer unloaded. It's raining.

This morning I heard a replay of Barak Obama's acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination to be President on the radio. I got all teary-eyed and choked up and inspired.

I'm in the process of debating how long I should do this job beyond my one-year contract because I'm very close to hating this job. The actual physical work isn't bad at all. In fact its easy if a bit boring at times. My growing hate is due more to my attachment to living in one place, and to being used to having more time and space (like an apartment and a regular 8 hour/5 day work schedule) to do non-work related stuff.
Also, making plans is difficult. If I want to be somewhere for my "hometime," (I get one day off for every seven days on the road), I have to get my dispatcher to find me a load to that place and hope I can get to my appointment on time based on the load parameters. Sucks.

On the other hand, what other job lets you hang out in any of the lower 48 for a couple of days once a month? And the overhead is low (`cause I have no house, car, etc.) so I've got all kinds of disposable income....I guess that's it for the positives.

Where will you land when you decide to stop driving?

And, did the time spent give you experiences you're glad to have had? A painful familiarity with American roadways and fast-food?

Did you really get teary-eyed? Your emoticon-free lifestyle leads me to be unable to sift sarcasm from your words. But I will say that watching the Obama campaign has led me to actually hope he wins. Not that McCain loses, but that Obama WINS. I guess I'm going to go register to vote.
