So I'm starting a story. And even if I finish it today, it's posting on 9/6/08. Cos I need to keep up with at least one a week, and if I can work ahead enough, it will get me through dry spells.
Of course, on the sixth, there may be just one sentance posted. Who knows?
Still thinking about world building. Not sure how to handle race, if at all. Do I need to become an anthropologist and figure out climates and cultures and clothing and appearances? I think I'll make the main setting as mixed bag as possible, with the justification that at some point in their history, they'd conquered everyone else.
What about gender? I already know the focus will not be on a heavily male dominated society cause I WILL have female protagonists and I am not interested in reading about women struggling against a male dominated fantasy world yet again, and am certainly not interested in writing about it. But the simple average size difference makes a male dominated military not neccesarily a bad idea.
Religion? Trade? I should've just gone with some sci-fi space opera. Thinly sketched out single ecosystem planets are the way to go, man. With one-note alien cultures.
I'd like to write an elven analogue, some time, even though I know they're the most overused race in fantasy. I want them to be predators, carnivores, nomadic pack animals elevated to sentient stature. Maybe even with the sort of high culture that is stereotypical of elves, with modifications to fit the nomadic lifestyle.
Fine arts and all, but because they're always on the move, no heavy metalwork, glass blowing, crafts requiring large kilns or ovens or forges. No studies in fermentation or farming. Gemcutting, leatherworking, carvings in stone and wood and bone. Primarily oral art and history. No vast libraries, but with their longevity, no great need.
